Xander Schauffele lets his dad have the first drink from Claret Jug as America celebrates first sweep of golf majors since 1982

Xander Schauffele had one person in his mind after he conquered the 152nd Open Championship.

His father.

Schauffele has won two majors this season (The Open, PGA Championship) and is up to No. 2 in the Official World Golf Rankings, only trailing Scottie Scheffler.

After dominating the final day at Royal Troon with a 65 on Sunday and finishing nine-under par, Schauffele was eager to place his hands on the famed Claret Jug.

But his father, Stefan, had first dibs.

"I’m just curious to see what my dad is going to pick as a first drink to drink out of this," Schauffele said.

“He’s going to have to figure out what he wants to put in there because he’s taking the first gulp out of it.”

The 30-year-old California native was surrounded by his family after the huge win.

He planned to let his father have first choice, then enjoy the pleasures of the Claret himself.

“I just can’t wait to drink out of it,” Schauffele said. “It really is a dream come true to be holding this."

He has more than $54 million in career earnings and nine PGA Tour wins.

The 2024 season has been a career breakthrough for Schauffele, who previously won tournaments including the Zurich Classic, Travelers Championship and Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Seven years after capturing the Greenbrier Classic, Schauffele is on top of the golf world.

While Scheffler struggled on Sunday, his American counterpart was as smooth as possible at rough and windy Royal Troon.

"I (felt) pretty calm coming down this stretch," Schauffele said.

Americans dominated the majors in 2024.

Scheffler took the Masters, Schauffele won the PGA and Open Championships, and Bryson DeChambeau captured the US Open with a memorable finish and celebration.

It was America's first sweep of golf's majors since 1982.

That year, Craig Stadler won the Masters, Tom Watson took the US Open and Open Championship, and Raymond Floyd prevailed at the PGA Championship.

In May, Schauffele celebrated his first PGA major win in style.

After fending off DeChambeau, Schauffele lifted the famous Wanamaker Trophy, which stands nearly 2.5 feet and weighs 27 pounds.

Then Schauffele really got down to business after his 21-under par domination.

Video footage showed the No. 2 golfer in the world watching champagne poured into the big silver trophy.

Schauffele then lifted up the hardware, tipped the Wanamaker backward and happily indulged in a beverage of champions.

He also tried to trash talk Michael Jordan after the win -- and it didn't go well.

"I did my best version of it," Schauffele said. "And then he beat me straight up, which is embarrassing."

Air Jordan has never won the Claret Jug, though.

The 3M Open and 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are next on the golf calendar.
