Dan Brown secured young brother nice payday with prize money for top ten finish and now has place at 2025 Open thanks to rule

Dan Brown's family will be in a celebratory mood following his impressive weekend at The Open.

Xander Schauffele lifted the Claret Jug at Royal Troon on Sunday but his victory was just one of the top stories from the tournament.

Brown put himself in shock contention to win when he ended the third round tied in second and one shot off the lead.

The Yorkshireman, who was also spotted smoking cigarettes during rounds, was unable to go all the way but still did enough to ensure his visit to Scotland ended in success.

He impressed on the back nine to finish level par and tied for tenth alongside fellow Brit Matthew Jordan and Australian Adam Scott.

A top ten finish is a huge achievement in it's own right but it has also secured him another chance for glory in a year's time.

Rules dictate that top ten finishers qualify for the next Open, so Brown will return in 2025 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

The 29-year-old's £246,000 winnings for his 2024 finish are the biggest of his career so far, while his younger brother Ben served as his caddie and as a result, has earned himself a seven-and-a-half per cent cut of the winnings - it would have been ten if he'd won.

“He’s getting a nice little payday,” Brown said. “Not too bad for a 19-year-old lad.”

Brown was close to falling outside of the top ten on Sunday having struggled in the first eight holes before pulling off his comeback.

"At the minute it’s probably a little bit more disappointment,” he said afterwards. "But when I reflect on it, I’ll be very pleased, I would have thought.

"If you would have told me that [he would finish in the top ten] at the start of the week, obviously I would have been very pleased. Portrush was in my head a little bit towards the back nine.

"Obviously I took myself out of contention quite early, so that was playing on my mind a little bit. But it still didn’t really affect me in terms of hitting shots."

Brown finished nine off champion Schauffele, with the American securing the second major title of his career following his PGA Championship win earlier this year.
