Dan Brown surprised himself with after party as he celebrated The Open prize money

Dan Brown admits that his celebrations were quite 'tame' despite finishing in the top ten on his debut at The Open.

The 29-year-old put himself in surprise contention for glory when he headed into the final round in second and one shot off the lead.

Although he didn't go all the way, with Xander Schauffele the man to take the crown, Brown finished level on par and tied for tenth with Matthew Jordan and Adam Scott.

Not long after he finished his final hole, the Yorkshireman revealed his plans to celebrate by saying: "I can get on the drink now."

And while he most certainly revelled in his success, he revealed to talkSPORT that it wasn't exactly a wild night.

"There were a few beers," he said when appearing on Hawksbee and Jacobs on Monday.

"To be honest I actually kept it quite tame, tamer than I thought it was going to be anyway. Just had a couple of glasses of red wine, a couple of beers and then that was it."

Brown earned an impressive £246,000 in winnings from his result, the biggest pay cheque of his career to date, with seven-and-a-half per cent going to his caddie and brother Ben.

His finish in the top ten has also secured him an exemption for next year's Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

Despite a strong finish on the third day he struggled on the front nine on Sunday, but seemingly used a return to the tournament in 2025 as motivation to get over the line.

"After I had a bit of a poor front nine, that was kind of the thing that I was looking towards. It was just making sure I finish top ten really, obviously knowing that it would get me into next year's event," Brown said.

"I knew going down the last nine I could afford to make a bogey and still finish top ten so yeah, very pleased that I'll be back again next year."

Given it was his first appearance at a major, it's unsurprising to think that many golf fans wouldn't know too much about Brown.

However, he's hoping his performance at the weekend can turn any doubters into believers as he builds upon his Open success.

"From my point of view, I think a lot of people probably wrote me off. But I did feel like, certainly after two or three days, that I could go and win," Brown said.

"Obviously it didn't materialise that way but yeah a lot of confidence and hopefully people can take me a little bit more seriously now."
