Chelsea's decision-makers will be praying Graham Potter is offered the England job.

Potter has been out of work since leaving Stamford Bridge in April 2023 after spending less than seven months in charge - but they're still paying him.

As part of that separation, Chelsea will still provide Potter his salary of £200,000-per-week until October this year.

The Blues will remain obliged to pay this amount unless Potter accepts an offer from elsewhere - a situation that means that his new salary would be deducted from that £200,000 total being paid by Chelsea.

Potter continues to be linked with the England job following Gareth Southgate's decision to resign.

Southgate earned around £5million a year in his role - around £100,000 per week - during his near-eight years in charge of the national team.

That means that if Potter took the job on the same salary as Southgate, it would save Chelsea around £1million.

Potter was quizzed on the England vacancy on Thursday, but refused to be drawn on the links.

After accepting an honorary doctorate by Leeds Beckett University - his old uni - he said: "I don’t think today’s the day to speak about that. Gareth has done a fantastic job.

"I don't think there is anybody in the country that is more respected in football than Gareth.

"I think he and his team led the country in a really good way and I have huge respect for him.

"And today's the day to wish him a nice break because he deserves that. And to wish him well in whatever he does in the part of his career."

Potter is one of the candidates under consideration, along with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and victorious under-21 European Championship winning coach Lee Carsley.

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil is also thought to have admirers within the FA.
