Barcelona announced Hansi Flick as their new manager just minutes after club legend Xavi's departure was confirmed.

Xavi first revealed in January that he would leave the Spanish giants this summer but then performed a U-turn and opted to stay.

However, just weeks later, it was decided that the former midfielder would in fact leave Barcelona ahead of next season.

The club confirmed this in a statement on Wednesday: "FC Barcelona and Xavi Hernandez Creus have reached an agreement to sever the contract the coach and his staff had with the Club until the end of the 2024/25 season."

Just 12 minutes later, they teased the arrival of Flick as their new boss with a post on social media site X.

A screenshot from a phone shows them typing the word 'Fußball', the German translation for football amid their new boss' nationality.

Ex-Bayern Munich and Germany boss Flick was then officially confirmed as Xavi's replacement in a post moments later, signing a two-year deal.

After 17 years as a player for Barcelona, Xavi returned to the club in 2021 as their replacement for Ronald Koeman.

He guided the club to a LaLiga and Spanish Super Cup double last season, beating Real Madrid in the process.

However this season, Barcelona fell of the pace and could only finish second in the league and then points behind their rivals.

They were also knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Paris Saint-Germain with an aggregate score of 6-4, despite winning the first leg 3-2.

Flick arrives with a depth of experience to his name in European football and on the international stage.

The 59-year-old won two Bundesliga titles, the German Cup, the German Super Cup, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup at Bayern.

Flick was most recently in charge of the German national team but was unable to guide them out of the group stages at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and was sacked in September.
