Manchester United have finished eighth to seal an unwanted record of their lowest ever Premier League finish.
Erik ten Hag's side were still in contention for European qualification despite fluctuating results throughout the season.
However, recent defeats to Crystal Palace and Arsenal left them with an improbable task on the final day of the Premier League.
Man United needed Chelsea and Newcastle to lose and to overcome a goal difference swing of 24 goals to at least finish seventh.
But despite a 2-0 win over Brighton thanks to goals from Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Hojlund, they have finished eighth to mark their worst ever final standing since the competition's inception in 1992.
The record was previously held in the 2013/14 season, the first after Sir Alex Ferguson left the club, when they finished seventh.

Chelsea beat Bournemouth 2-1 and Newcastle won 4-2 against Brentford, with Man United still a long way off the top of English football with their latest finish.
They can still qualify for Europe next season though as victory in the FA Cup final against Manchester City would give them a spot in the Europa League.
But their Premier League finish puts a downer on their campaign and it's stark decline from when they came third last season.
Man United end the season having won just 18 of their 38 league games, 14 defeats, six draws and a goal difference of -1.
They also crashed out of the Champions League at the group stage and exited the Carabao Cup in the fourth round.
Ten Hag's future as boss has been up in the air in recent months and Sunday's result only adds to the pressure on the Dutchman.
