Tiger Woods is one of the most famous names on the planet, but fans were shocked to discover that it isn't his real name.
No, the American's first name is actually Eldrick Tont Woods, and the story behind how he adopted his cat moniker is interesting.
Woods has enjoyed a sparkling career in golf, dominating the sport for many years, and even after injuries and personal issues, he's still competing with the very best.
His sporting achievements have been chronologically detailed over and over again, but the reason why he's called Tiger hasn't been covered so extensively.
Here, talkSPORT.com looks at the origins of Woods being called Tiger rather than Eldrick.
Why is Tiger Woods called Tiger?
Woods was born in Cypress, California on December 30, 1975 and his parents named him Eldrick Tont.

His father was Earl, and his mother was Kultida, and he was given the name because Eldrick began with the same letter as Earl, and Tont is a traditional Thai name [his mother being from Thailand].
But the name Tiger actually comes from someone his dad knew.
Earl Woods was in the US Army and was close friends with Colonel Vuong Dang Phong.
He was known as 'Tiger', and Earl started to call his son the same name.
In a past interview with ESPN, Earl said: "I knew instinctively that my son was going to have fame.
"Some day my old friend would see him on television, read about him in a newspaper or magazine, and say, 'That must be Woody's kid', and we'd find each other again."

Regrettably, Phong was never able to make the connection between the two before he passed away, but would have been overjoyed.
Earl later told Golf Digest: "Phong would be totally flabbergasted by Tiger, completely blown away. He would view him as his own son.
"He wouldn't know a damned thing about golf, but it wouldn't be necessary. He would be so proud and so happy."
When Woods started out in amateur golf, he started to use this nickname, and by the time he turned professional, that was how he was known.
Interestingly, on all of his official records, he uses Eldrick rather than Tiger although surprisingly, his father uses neither of these names.
During an interview with the Augusta Chronicle, Woods said: "My father had always called me Sam since the day I was born.
He rarely ever called me Tiger. I would ask him, 'Why don't you ever call me Tiger?' He said, 'Well, you look more like a Sam'."

But to the millions of people who watch him compete, he will always be Tiger.
However, it's good to know that the name he uses has some wholesome origins and actually has close links to his father.
