Shane Lowry directed a fuming, X-rated rant towards a cameraman at The Open after a nightmare experience on the 11th hole.

The 2019 Open champion is in pole position after his second day of the course, having stormed into the lead with his seven under par score.

Lowry had sat in second place behind Englishman Daniel Brown at the end of day one on Thursday, but surged ahead early on Friday to claim the solo lead by the time he arrived at the notoriously difficult 11th hole.

But for a moment, it did look as though Lowry's lead could be about to disappear completely.

He was not the first golfer to be upset by the 11th at Royal Troon, with Rory McIlroy falling victim to the difficult hole on his first day and recording a double bogey putt.

And Lowry suffered exactly the same fate on day two.

His second shot on the par-four hole went far astray, landing into some gorse bushes and apparently disappearing from sight.

It was evidently a moment of intense frustration for the former winner, who angrily turned to a cameraman before unleashing some very choice words.

He was heard telling the cameraman: "As I was over the ball I could just see you putting your f***ing camera up. Just get out of the way. Just get back there. F*** sake.”

After this unfortunate second shot, the 37-year-old had swiftly opted to take a penalty drop and take his fourth shot onto the green.

But he was forced to backtrack when a spectator eventually found his original ball among the bushes.

With the ball therefore deemed to be still in play, Lowry instead took a drop after a lengthy pause - although his fourth shot this time did not quite reach the green.

And even a bogey was to prove unattainable, as he put the ball just past the cup with his fifth shot, forcing him to settle for a double bogey which erased his solo lead completely.

He and Brown then shared the lead at five-under at that point.

However, the Irishman went on to make a remarkable recovery from that point onwards, securing two birdies on the 16th and the 18th holes to restore his score to seven under.

He finished the course on the second day with a comfortable lead as he prepares for the weekend's action.

As Lowry told reporters after his impressive first day, the real trick would be to keep up his momentum across the rest of the tournament.

He said on Thursday evening: "It's great, but there's three rounds left.

"If I don't play well the next three rounds, it doesn't matter what I shot today. I'm fully aware that I have a job to do over the next three days.

"Look, I'd give anything to win this tournament again. I'd give anything to give myself a chance to win this tournament again, and that's why I'm here this week. This is obviously a great start to do that."

However, there was to be no such success for the three-time Open champion Tiger Woods.

The American was unable to recover from a poor first day which saw him finish eight-over 79.

He ultimately finished the course on +14 after another difficult day, although he confirmed to fans and reporters that he was planning to play in next year's tournament.
