Has Shane Lowry won a major and what is his professional record? The Open leader chasing Claret Jug

Shane Lowry is leading the way at Troon at the halfway stage after a second round that sent Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods home.

The Irish star overcame The Open's blustery conditions to hold a two-shot lead over England's Daniel Brown heading into the weekend.

Lowry carded a double-bogey at the par-four 11th but battled back in incredible fashion to top the leaderboards with seven-under-par.

The 37-year-old has struggled at times in 2024, with T43, T6, and T19 finishes in the other three major championships.

However, in May, he also equalled the lowest-ever score at a men's major at Valhalla and that form has now put the Claret Jug in sight.

He now has the chance to double his tally again on British soil following a brilliant two days from the PGA Tour rank number 33.

Five years ago in Northern Ireland, Lowry claimed the Open Championship by a margin of six strokes over Tommy Fleetwood.

Having failed to convert a four-shot lead in the 2016 US Open's final round, Lowry held his nerve at Royal Portrush to claim his first title.

Half a decade later, the County Offaly-born golfer has the chance to get his hands on the Claret Jug again.

And Lowry claimed his experience of winning the 2019 Open will be 'very beneficial' in his bid for a second title.

"I don't know what I'm going to reach in and grab in the memory bank but it will be very beneficial that I've done this before," Lowry told BBC Sport NI.

"There are a lot of guys on that leaderboard that will be gunning for me and gunning for other people.

"Everyone's going to be giving it their best. These are the best golfers in the world but I'm going to give it my best shot."
