Son of talkSPORT pundit Danny Mills pokes fun at dad after winning medal at European Athletics Championships

George Mills was quick to tease dad Danny after he scooped Great Britian's first medal of the European Athletics Championships.

The 25-year-old, who is the son of the ex-England international and talkSPORT pundit, finished in second spot in the 5,000m event in Rome.

It is his first senior medal, with Mills clocking a time of 13 minutes and 21.38 seconds to win the silver - finishing narrowly behind Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

And Mills was in high spirits after the race, where he poked fun at doing something his father couldn't do... running at the Stadio Olimpico.

Danny warmed the subs bench twice at the famous stadium in Italy's capital 24 years ago.

He was an unused substitute in Leeds' 0-0 draw with Roma in the UEFA Cup in March 2000, before sitting out the 1-0 defeat to Lazio in December that year in the Champions League.

Quick to remind Danny of that fact, he told BBC Sport: "He came here twice, but maybe on the bench."

And he also discussed his joy at being the second member of his OAC Europe team to enjoy success in the 5,000m.

Mills remarked: "My team got a medal in the 5,000m last night, bronze.

"Marta (Gracia), my team mate got bronze (in the women's 5000m) so I was like, 'OK, my time to step up now' and fortunately we’ve got two medals in two events for my team.'"

Attention for Mills now will turn towards the Olympic Games in Paris later this summer, where he has spoken of his intentions to compete in two races.

He stated: "I want to run the 1500m and the 5000m in Paris and hopefully tonight has done my chances of selection no harm.

"We’ll see. We are still three weeks out to trials, straight back to training as of tonight or tomorrow and then we’ll get stuck in."

Shortly after Mills' silver, sprinter Romell Glave picked up the bronze medal in the 100m event with a time of 10.06 seconds.
