Carlos Alcaraz beat him in the Wimbledon final while World No.1 Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev will also challenge Djokovic for gold.

And it’s a prize that has always seemed to evade him…

The World No.2 has seen numerous attempts to claim gold elude him in his career but he has picked up a bronze medal in the Games.

At Beijing 2008, he beat the USA’s James Blake to win the third-place match and claim a place on the podium.

Since then, Djokovic finished fourth in 2012, 33rd in 2016 and fourth again in 2020.

The top step will be his aim once again this time around and he’ll be hoping to end his curse of just missing out.

Speaking earlier this year it was clear that ending that trend of fourth-place finishes was his goal, aiming to be at his ‘peak’ for the Games.

"The Paris Olympics are very important - the Olympics have always been a priority for me," Djokovic said.

"But in the last three or four Olympics, it's not been possible for me to reach the later stages [the final].

"The situation is a bit different now. We are playing our first Olympics on clay. I want to be ready physically and mentally."
