That was enough to finish fourth in the overall leaderboards.

Team GB have consistently won over 50 medals since Beijing 2008, finishing in the top 5 of the medal table at each of the Games since.

65 medals at London 2012 was enough for third spot, with 67 medals seeing them go one better to claim second at Rio 2016.

How many could Team GB win in Paris?

Team GB are targeting a minimum of 50 medals, with a record haul of up to 70 an achievable target this summer.

They are aiming for a third of those to be golds but has stopped short of a specific target to avoid adding unnecessary pressure.

Dr Kate Baker, UK Sport’s director of performance, said: “We are definitely not complacent but we are feeling confident.

“We are likely to be the only nation, other than the USA or China, who will be bold enough to say that we can go to these Games and come home with a minimum of 50 medals.

“That is an extraordinary achievement. We feel really confident that we can get 50 to 70 and on a good day that 70 is really within our grasp. Our breadth is our super strength.”

In the absence of a team representing Russia, Team GB would be expected to finish third should they deliver on the prospective target.

Although behind the US and China, Team GB would be ahead of former Olympic hosts Japan and current hosts France.
