England's Test team made history in the second innings of their match at Trent Bridge against the West Indies on Sunday.

Gus Atkinson hit the runs that took England to 400 in the innings, which means it's the first time they have ever scored 400 or more in both innings of a Test match.

It is a piece of history that will make Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes very proud as England continue to hit new heights under their leadership.

The hosts had Harry Brook and Joe Root to thank for getting England to this new feat, as the duo scored centuries.

Brook and Root put on an 189-run partnership as they punished the West Indies bowlers with a sublime display of batting.

Brook reached his century first, coming in just 116 balls, and incredibly, it was his first on home soil.

He made 109 before getting out.

Root saw a few partners come and go, including captain Ben Stokes.

But he remained a calm presence in the middle and eased his way to a century before going on to make 122.

He then swiped a Jason Holder delivery straight to Kirk McKenzie to be dismissed.

But he and Brook had done the job and ensured England made history.

They were eventually bowled out for 425 set the West Indies 385 to chase.

In the first innings, England made 416 on day one after being put into bat by Kraigg Brathwaite after the visitors won the toss.

Ben Duckett got Stokes' men off to a flyer with one of the quickest Test 50s by an English batter before falling for 71.

Ollie Pope held it together and scored a magnificent 121, while Stokes made a valuable contribution of 69.

But the Windies exploited a pretty tepid pitch and managed to take a lead going into the second innings.

Kavem Hodge's first Test century was a special moment for him, and he helped the visitors reach 457.

He made 120 and was supported by Alick Athanaze and Joshua Da Silva, who both made solid contributions of 82.

But England weren't imposed by what the Windies did and have now made a little piece of history at Trent Bridge.

And England made quick work of the second innings, bowling the visitors out for 143, with Shoaib Bashir taking 5-41.

England are now 2-0 up with just one match left to play.
